The Mission of CPE at Anne Arundel Medical Center is to provide, foster, and oversee experiential theological education, which combines the practice of spiritual care with qualified supervision and peer group reflection, grounded in an approach to ministry which is person-centered, multi-culturally sensitive and inclusive.

The Vision of CPE at Anne Arundel Medical Center is to be fully integrated into the mission of the medical center, financially sustainable with an education program which is recognized for excellence.

The Goals for CPE at Anne Arundel Medical Center are:

  • To provide a strong CPE program for all levels of ACPE CPE to a diverse group of qualified participants

  • To ensure excellence and accountability through accreditation with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education

  • To provide exceptional spiritual care to patients, their loved ones, as well as the medical team and employees at Anne Arundel Medical Center

  • To develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with diverse faith groups, religious judicatories, theological schools and local inter-faith educational programs

  • To promote professional ethics and practice in all educational and business dealings

  • To promote personal and professional inclusivity and awareness of bias and disparities in the care of patients, their loved ones, and the medical team and employees

History of CPE at Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC)

  • 1986 CPE program began at AAMC

  • 1997 Program discontinued

  • 2014 Program re-instituted

  • 2018 Program became a satellite of Johns Hopkins CPE

  • 2023 AAMC applied for provisional accreditation with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)

  • 2025 AAMC granted full accreditation with ACPE

Robert and Katherine Lantz

CPE at Anne Arundel Medical Center is supported by Mrs. Katherine Lantz in honor of her late husband, Robert Lantz.

Rev. Dr, Lantz was a CPE supervisor and pastoral counselor in the Annapolis region. He was heavily invested in the support for and education of those who provide spiritual care.

In 2017, Rev. Michael Kurtz connected AAMC and Mrs. Lantz in order to begin planning for CPE at AAMC. Mrs. Lantz has been a faithful supporter since that time enabling the CPE program to provide CPE education to over 30 individuals since 2018.
